10. AI Won’t Fix a Broken House (And Other Lessons from a Cranky Week)

I’ll be honest: I’m feeling a little cranky this week.
I’ve been out in the market talking to agencies of all shapes and sizes. I’ve seen the full spectrum: the small shop desperate for an AI miracle, the mid-sized firm drowning in "change fatigue" and organizational trauma, and the boutique looking for a Head of Media who is "hands-on" for an executive-level role. Everyone is looking for a silver bullet. Usually, they think that silver bullet is finding an SVP of Data Entry.
The "SVP of Data Entry" Paradox
In these interviews, I keep hearing a version of the same thing: "We want someone senior enough to lead, but junior enough to be in the trenches every day."
To be blunt: that doesn't make sense. You’re being asked to be the architect and the bricklayer at the same time, which usually means the house never actually gets designed. If your senior leaders are spent "doing" the $20 tasks, pulling the reports, manually adjusting the bids, or chasing siloed data, they aren't "leading" the $2,000 strategy.
You should want a leader who is senior enough to understand how the data drives the strategy, and a strong enough coach to help the team see that data so they can execute. You don't need an Executive who plays the triangle; you need a conductor who knows exactly how the whole orchestra should sound.
The Real Silver Bullet: SVP of AI & Media Strategy
The actual breakthrough isn't finding a person who can "do it all" manually. It is a leader who understands how to combine AI with Media Strategy to create the brain space required to move the needle.
AI creates Strategic Capacity. It buys back the thinking time your team needs to stop being processors and start being partners. But all the settings and shiny tools in the world don't matter if you don't know what actually drives the execution. Data is the driver, but the strategy is the map.
If your "architect" is too busy laying bricks, who is making sure the building doesn't lean?
When the Foundation is Cracked
I’ve seen a lot of "trauma" in these meetings lately. Teams are weighed down by too many pivots and too much process debt. When your agency is going through that kind of change, you can't leapfrog straight to automation. You have to go back to the basics.
I’m reminded of The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team. If there is a lack of trust or a fear of conflict, like the nightmare Sales-to-Media handoffs I’ve fixed in the past, no algorithm is going to save you. You have to use that "Strategic Capacity" to actually talk to each other and define what a "win" looks like for everyone.
Moving the Needle
I’m a veteran of the engine room. I love the pipes. But I know that the pipes only matter if the people on the ship know where they are going. If your agency is feeling the weight of the "SVP of Data Entry" trap or the friction of a broken process, maybe you don't need another pair of hands in the weeds. Maybe you need an architect to come in, roll up their sleeves, and help you get back to the basics:
Trust the Data: Stop guessing. Let the data drive the execution.
Coach the Talent: Empower your people to own the work instead of doing it for them.
Clear the Path: Use technology to kill the $20 tasks so your team can focus on the $2,000 strategy.
I’m looking for my next challenge. Whether you need a full-time leader to own the P&L and the transformation, or you just need a fractional partner to fix the handoff and stop the churn, I’m ready to talk. No binders, no fluff—just the work.
